Linear stability theory is used to investigate the onset of longitudinal vortices in laminar boundary layers along horizontal semi-infinite flat plates heated or cooled isothermally from below by considering the density inversion effect for water using a cubic temperature-density relationship. The analysis employs non-parallel flow model incorporating the variation of the basic flow and temperature fields with the streamwise coordinate as well as the transverse velocity component in the disturbance equations. J.D. Eshelby (1957, 1959) has calculated the deformation field associated with an ellipsoidal inclusion in a state of homogeneous strain within an infinite matrix. Since most real precipitates occur with facets, the strain within such an inclusion is not uniform. Thus, plate precipitates of θ′ in Al-Cu and η in Al-Au have coherent broad faces with mismatches of 1.34 and 4.95 % respect- ively and semicoherent or disordered interfaces at the edges with residual mismatches of about ?4.3 and ?1.00% normal to the broad faces. The deformation field in the matrix around such precipitates has been calculated using Kelvin's (1848) result for the stress field due to a point force. The calculations show the existence of high stresses near the edges of the precipitates where they have an appreciable misfit. Unlike the case of an ellipsoidal inclusion, the stress fields of these precipitates have dilatational components which can affect the diffusion of solute atoms to them and, thus, the kinetics of interface migration. The behavior of alloys containing these precipitates indicates that the moduli of the precipitates are somewhat greater than those of the matrices. The present calculations, based on the assumption that the two moduli are the same, underestimate the actual deformation field in the matrix. In real systems, therefore, the effects of the deformation field on misfit dislocation nucleation and kinetics of interface migration are likely to be somewhat greater in general.  相似文献

The problem of a center-cracked strip subjected to uniform remote anti-plane shear stress is transformed to a problem in a hodograph plane which is solved exactly by Mellin transform and Wiener-Hopf technique. The material of the strip satisfies a pure power hardening stress strain relation and the results are valid for both deformation and flow theories of placticity. Numerical values are given for the crack opening displacement δ and Rice's path independent J integral for several values of the power hardening exponent n and crack width to strip width ratios. Approximate asymptotic formulas are presented for J and δ for large n.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to measure the effective thermal conductivity of a sheared suspension of rigid spherical particles. The objective was to verify the theoretical prediction of Leal (1973) for a dilute suspension undergoing shear at low particle Peclet number, and to extend the range of the experiments to conditions beyond the scope of the theory. Surprisingly, reasonable agreement with the theoretical prediction was observed even for suspensions of moderate concentrations (volume fraction ≤ 0.25) and higher Peclet numbers [Pe 0(1)]. The trend of the data, however, verifies the obvious fact that the theory does not completely describe the transport behavior at higher concentrations and Peclet numbers. The range of quantitative applicability of Leal's result is apparently only for Pe < 0.01 and < 0.01, but the changes in the effective thermal conductivity in this domain were too small to be measured in our apparatus.  相似文献

A common glass plate has been shown to be an adaptable and effective tool for use in speckle-shearing interferometry. Analyses of both the imaging system and the optical-filtering arrangement have been developed. Experiments were performed successfully. The results of these experiments have shown that visible speckle correlation fringes related to the derivatives of surface displacement are obtained when a common glass plate is used as a shearing component.  相似文献

At various locations in the arterial system, plaques, or small relatively isolated protuberances, can develop on the inner wall of the vessel and project into the lumen. A number of investigators have suggested that the development and growth of these protuberances is related to the flow in the vicinity of the protuberance. In this study, the conditions under which the flow separates from an isolated protuberance located in a cylindrical tube were investigated. The critical Reynolds number at which separation first takes place for a given protuberance was determined. A series of tests was performed for steady flow of a Newtonian fluid through a rigid tube in which protuberances of various sizes were inserted. The results of the tests show the effect of the protuberance height and shape on the separation characteristics. In general, the results indicate that separation takes place at relatively small values of the Reynolds number; values that commonly occur in the arterial system, so that this phenomenon may be important in the study of the “coupling” between blood flow and arterial lesions.  相似文献

An ultrahigh-speed multiple-frame recording system for two- and three-dimensional dynamic photomechanics has been developed and is described here. The output from a ruby laser is modulated with a Pockels cell to produce a train of short, intense, monochromatic and polarized light pulses. Pulse widths of 50 nsec and repetition rates of up to 170,000 pulses/sec are obtained. These light pulses are synchronized with a “smear camera” and the event to produce a multiple-frame record of the phenomenon. The simplified camera requirements necessary for this purpose are indicated. The system is demonstrated by recording two-dimensional dynamic and scattered-light isochromatic fringe patterns. The capability of multiple recording of scattered-light fringe patterns, achieved here for the first time, has a tremendous potential for three-dimensional dynamic stress analysis. The developed system is also well suited for dynamic moiré, interferometry and holography.  相似文献

This investigation is concerned with predicting failure initiation sites ina butt weld joint under bending. The nonuniform load transmission characteristics through the weld metal, heat-affected zone and base material resulting from alteration in their microstructure are reflected through the macroscopic yield strength parameter. Elastic-plastic stress and strain redistribution is obtained for each increment of load increase. Analyzed in detail are the contours of constant strain energy density for determining the local and global stationary values which are assumed to be related to failure and stability of the system. Failure is predicted to initiate in the heat affected zone at the site of maximum of the minimum local strain energy density function. This corresponds to the experimental observation where cracking starts from the side of the butt joint where local stretching is maximum.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to measure the base pressure distribution of a flow field induced by a potential vortex with its axis normal to a stationary disk. The center base pressure coefficient of the vortex, C0(0), was found to be proportional to Reynolds number from Re = 2.0 × 103 to Re > 2.5 × 104, where Re is based on the disk radius and azimuthal velocity at the disk edge. This behavior of C0(0) is at variance with the experimental results of Phillips (Phys. Fluids, 27, 2215, 1984) and Khoo (M. Eng. Thesis, Natl. Univ. Singapore, 1984), which showed vastly different trends depending on Re. Plausible reasons are suggested for the apparent discrepancies observed. Finally, the extent of the effusing core at the center, r1 (taken to be the radial position where departure from the outer potential flow took place), was found to be proportional to Re−1/2 for all Re values considered.  相似文献

The theory of an automated fringe-pattern analysis using temporal phase stepping method for moiré interferometry is presented. The automated method provides a fast and accurate strain measurement for moiré interferometry. Measurements on a tapered composite specimen with a dropped ply are shown to highlight the capability of this technique to obtain the strain distribution, particularly around the region with a dropped ply.  相似文献
